If you’re thinking of tattoo removal, you’re not the only one. According to studies, nearly 11% of all people with tattoos have had them removed. 26% of millennials with tattoos wish to have them removed.
You may be considering removal for one or more of the following reasons:
Successful multi-color tattoo removal requires a high powered laser that can deliver enough energy within the absorption spectrum of a wide range of colors. As the tattoo ink particles absorb the energy from the laser, the particles heat up and then shatter into tiny fragments. Breaking the ink up into tiny fragments, allows your immune system to then excrete the tiny ink particles.
During your first session, the laser’s energy will be absorbed by the ink in the uppermost layer of skin. Since tattoo ink is injected into deeper layers of the dermis, laser tattoo removal requires multiple sessions in order to penetrate multiple layers and entirely remove a tattoo. The ink penetrated by the laser in each layer must be flushed out of the area and out of your system before additional treatments can be effective. For this reason, and in order to heal blistering/scabbing, treatments should be spaced at least 6 weeks apart.
There is a level of pain in the laser tattoo removal process. Although, many people say that it was less painful than they expected. People often describe the pain as being similar to getting a tattoo. The pulses of light are often described as feeling like zaps.
After you laser tattoo removal session you’ll need to keep the treated area covered with sterile gauze and a layer of antibiotic or healing ointment for 3-7 days after your treatment. Additional aftercare instructions will be provided during your appointment.
The number of sessions you’ll need will depend on the size of the tattoo you wish to remove, the age of the tattoo and the varying colors. During your consultation, we’ll be able to give you a good idea of how many sessions you’ll need.
You’ll likely experience blistering, redness, swelling, and itching after your session. For a person with a healthy immune system, most of the healing will take place in the first 3 days and should be fully healed by within 2 weeks. Healing times decrease after each session.
